Origin Story

Martin Goodman was a publisher and the founder of Marvel Comics which launched its first issue October 1939. It featured the Human Torch and the Namor the Sub-Mariner. Initially named Timely Comics then Atlas Comics, the Marvel era in 1961 with the Fantastic Four.

Stanley Lieber (Martin’s cousin) began at the young age of 16yrs old, and by 1941 was working as an editor. It wasn’t until 1972 that Stan Lee succeeded Chip Goodman as publisher and (briefly) became Marvel’s President.

Stan Lee remained publisher until 1996, and continued as figurehead for Marvel making cameo appearances in each Marvel Entertainment movie. Stan died in 2018 at the age of 95.

Marvel’s more successful comic book series have been Fantastic Four, Spider-man, the X-Men, Captain American and the Avengers. Recent years have seen a surge of popularity with newer characters such as Venom, Guardians of the Galaxy, and Deadpool.
